TOOL AND PROCESS DESIGN

Advanced design and continuous product optimisation are achieved thanks to our highly experienced engineers and cutting-edge design and simulation software. SMB Medical collaborates with its customers from the early stages of development through to the final process and product design.
SMB Medical has a state-of-the-art in-house dye and tool production with a large capacity of 3- and 5-axis CNC heavy high-speed milling centres. This ensures the required precision machining of its tool steels.

FORGING

SMB Medical has designed a unique forging facility tailored to the required standards of the orthopaedic market. In the precision forging process the repeatability of structural and directional properties is achieved through thermo-mechanical processing of high performance alloys by controlling deformation variables. The control of the grain flow in our forgings produces excellent directional properties such as strength, ductility, resistance to impact and fatigue. Our capabilities include also a full range of heat treatment processes such as solution and recrystallization annealing, ageing and stress relieving.

MACHINING

SMB Medical’s extensive CNC machining capabilities after forging, such as milling, turning and grinding, offer a wide range of design and finishing options. We focus on lean manufacturing and work with renowned Swiss precision in the machining of tibia base plates, tapers, impaction and extraction holes, distal and medial design features of femoral stems as well as of threaded holes of trauma plates.

FINISHING

SMB Medical offers an extensive range of in-house finishing processes dedicated to the requirements of the orthopaedic industry, from surface grinding, vibratory-grinding and deburring, chemical etching, pickling, shot peening and sandblasting to automated surface mirror polishing and laser marking.
Together with our strategic partners in coating and sterile packaging we are able to supply our customers with fully finished implants.
